About the Author
Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970. Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors. They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels. Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976. That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now in its fourteenth edition. In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team. Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects. Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio. Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades. Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything. Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

I directly asked my professor if the 11th edition was fine, and he insisted that we get the 12th edition. I got this one anyway.Maybe our understanding of billions-of-years-old processes hasn't changed dramatically in the three years between the 11th and 12th editions? Seems that way, because my classmates' 12th edition textbooks were virtually identical to my 11th edition.Don't support the ridiculous textbook industry. If you must purchase this book for class, get this edition. I got an A, and so will you.
This the best geology book that I have ever seen by far. Every page is illustrated with beautiful color photos and drawings. Many geological principals are described in mini lectures accessible by scanning QR symbols on the pages with your smart phone All features of geology are clearly covered. Can't see how this book could be any better
Excellent book for learning enough about geology to deeply understand my rock collecting hobby. But despite the cost, size and weight of the book, it does not have a hardcover. Its paper cover is so flimsy that the spine flops around and the book can only be read by laying it flat on a table. In a few days I found that so inconvenient and uncomfortable I've had to buy a large, solid-backed,book holder for it.
The information in the text book is excellent and the way everything is presented deserves five starts, but all of that is lost because of image quality. (Kindle version)All they would have to do to fix this is to reduce the amount of image compression and this text book would become readable. When you catch youself asking questions like “Is that blue blob sky or is it part of rock?†or “I can’t tell if that gray blob is a rock or just mud on the ground.â€It’s a shame that they ruined the book like this, since images here are important for the student to visually recognize rocks from eachother. And it would be very simple to fix this.
An interesting text book. Interesting even for non students, but for ordinary folks interested in how the planet works.
This is the textbook our instructor required. It came in OK condition - was definitely a used copy, but that was all right. When I was done with it all I had to do was print out the return label and drop it off at a UPS store.
This text covers a lot of material, and manages to do so quite thoroughly and even fairly readably. It is a useful textbook for any "Intro to Geology" class, and would even be useful for someone interested in exploring the subject on their own, outside of a classroom.
Okay first of all, I bought the book and it said it was supposed to come with the access card. I open my package, no access card. So basically it's useless
